On 6 July 2010, the new Government revoked Regional Spatial Strategies, so that they no longer form part of the statutory development plan.

The planning system in England, since 2004, has been made up of two levels of plan. The Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS), prepared at the regional level, and the Local Development Framework (LDF), prepared at a borough or district level.

On 6 July 2010, the new Government revoked Regional Spatial Strategies, so that they no longer form part of the statutory development plan.

What was a Regional Strategy?

The Regional Strategy set out a long-term strategic, spatial and integrated framework for the region. It provided direction for Local Development Frameworks and was considered when making decisions on planning applications. It included specific targets for the number of new homes to be built in each district or borough in the South East.

What happens now?

The Government has said that it is important for Local Councils like Waverley to continue to bring forward their Local Development Framework (LDF) Core Strategy and other LDF documents. Pending this, the saved policies in the Waverley Borough Local Plan will be the main local document used when determining planning applications.
